Tips for Eating Fast Food

Generally:

  • Choose small portions
  • Avoid deep-fried, pan-fried, basted, batter-dipped, breaded, creamy, crispy, scalloped, Alfredo, au gratin or in cream sauce altogether
  • Order items with more vegetables
  • Choose leaner meats
  • Avoid calorie and fat packed salad dressings, spreads, cheese and sour cream
  • Add flavor by pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes , catsup or mustard, not bacon
  • Skip cokes and sodas, instead drink water

Burgers:

  • Avoid double patties
  • Order regular or junior meals instead of supersized
  • Instead of fried, choose grill
  • Avoid breaded chicken and fish
  • Choose skinless chicken
  • Grilled chicken strips are better that nuggets or tenders
  • Choose veggie burger
  • Instead of fries, order salad or baked potato
  • Skip mayo and cheese
  • Limit gravy and other sauces
  • Avoid onion rings

Mexican food:

  • Soft tacos are better than crispy shells
  • Choose black beans
  • Choose veggie or bean burritos instead of nachos with refried beans
  • Limit sour cream and cheese

Sandwich and Deli:

  • Get a six-inch, not foot-ling sub
  • Choose whole-grain breads instead of white or wraps
  • Choose lean meats like roast beef, chicken breast or lean ham instead of high-fat meats such as ham, tuna salad, bacon, meatballs or steak
  • Choose lower fat cheeses, such as Swiss or mozzarella
  • Cheddar and American cheeses are high in fat
  • Instead of mayo, add low-fat dressings or mustard

Asian Foods:

  • Stir-fried, steamed, roasted or broiled entrees are better than battered or deep-fried dishes
  • Egg drop, miso, wonton, or hot and sour soup are healthier choices
  • Skip fried egg rolls, spare ribs and tempura
  • Have your tofu steamed or baked rather than deep-fried
  • Sauces such as ponzu, rice-wine vinegar, wasabi, ginger, and low-sodium soy sauce are better than coconut milk, sweet and sour sauces or regular soy sauces
  • Skip fried rice and choose steamed brown rice
  • Instead of salads with fried or crispy noodles choose edamame, cucumber salad, stir-fried veggies

Italian and pizza:

  • Thin-crust is better than thick-crust or butter-crust
  • Half cheese is better than extra cheese
  • Order veggie toppings instead of meat toppings
  • Plain rolls or bread sticks are better than garlic bread
  • Get your antipasto with vegetables not meats
  • Get your pasta with tomato sauce and veggies rather than cream or butter-based sauce
  • Orders a side of veggies, not pasta
  • Grilled dishes are better than fried
