Ezekiel 23 – Oholah and Oholibah

Ezekiel 23:20

When you read the entire book of Ezekiel 23, you could see that God was displeased with two nations; Samari and Jerusalem because of their adulterous behavior depicted by the story of two promiscuous sisters; one was Oholah which references Samaria, and the other was Oholibah as Jerusalem.

In God’s eyes, both nations betrayed Him through idolatry which He had warned them not to practice. They claimed to love God but yet they lusted after other nations, worshiped their idols and false gods.

Ezekiel 23:11

In verse 11, after God dealt with Samaria (Oholah) and the judgement that came upon her, her sister Jerusalem even after seeing what had happened to Samaria became more corrupted in her lust and harlotry.

The people of Jerusalem refused to turn away from their wickedness and idolatry. They refused to learn from what happened to Samaria but instead replicated all that Samaria did and even greater. They went after other nations to be liked, to worship their gods, to associate themselves with these nations.

And so God pronounced judgement upon Jerusalem and there was complete destruction of people and properties and captivity. Jerusalem paid a huge price for her disobedience and even though Samaria was gone from existence, Jerusalem was not as it was part of God’s plan for the end time.

Ezekiel 23:20

This verse reflects on Jerusalem lust towards the Assyrians, the Babylonians and back to her Egyptians, whose genitals were described as that of donkeys and whose emission are like that of horses.

Please Lord, help me to guide my heart and mind from worldly desires. Do not let the devil take control of my mind. Your words in Proverbs 4:23 (ESV) says “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Father, I have come to you today so you may take full control of my heart, and may out of it flow the springs of life, holy desires, good counsels etc. I know that whoever controls my mind controls my life. Please Lord, I hand over my mind and heart to you that you may control it.

Any traces of lustful desires and thoughts in my mind, I ask that you destroy them and cleanse my mind so it becomes as white as snow.

All these I ask in Jesus’ name – Amen.
